Japanese Cultural Exchange Day

On June 1st students from Toko Secondary School came to LA Matheson for the day to tour, interact with Canadian students, and teach about their culture. It was a fantastic day of cultural exchange that was enjoyed by all. Here are a few photos and a video from that day!

Friday June 1st- Japan Cultural Exchange Day

Konnichiwa Minasan!

Thank you to all of you who have volunteered to help out on Friday June 1st with our Japanese guests!
I'm very excited for this event to take place.

  • 9:30am- Assembly starts (speeches, gift exchange, presentation/dance, etc.)
  • ~10:30am- Pair up with Japanese students & School Tour
  • ~11:00am- Pick up chairs from cafe & escort students to their designated classrooms
  • 11:35am- Pick up students from classrooms & escort them back to the cafe  (10 mins BEFORE lu begins)
(~times are approximates)

Details:
  • Please remember to be in the SMALL GYM at 9:20am on FRIDAY JUNE 1st. The assembly starts at 9:30am sharp so DO NOT BE LATE and please DO NOT BACK OUT IF YOU SIGNED UP!!! We are counting on you! we will have close to 100 Japanese students that day.

  •  After speeches and presentations, you will each be paired up with 4-6 Japanese students. You will then take your group of students on a tour around the school (follow the instructions on the sheet of paper you will be given). Once the tour is finished you will get a chair for each students in the cafeteria and escort the students to designated classrooms where they will observe a class. Once you've dropped them off you may go to your own class for majority of the period. However, please get out of class (your sheet of paper is your ticket out and Ms.Thomson will email the teachers excusing you) 10 MINS BEFORE LUNCH and GO BACK AND PICK UP THE STUDENTS YOU DROPPED OFF! You will then escort them down to the cafeteria for lunch. Don't forget to bring the chairs back to the cafe!!!

  •  The afternoon will be the time when the Japanese students will be setting up their cultural booths. You will be able to be let out of class to help with this. Just be sure to inform your teacher.

It will be a great day! If for some reason you cannot attend (Ex: in event of Extreme illness only), please email me at the address provided on my webpage!

Arigatou gozaimasu! It will be a great and fun-filled day!
See you on Friday!

Bill 22 Action Plan

Konnichiwa Mina san,

Gomen nasai. As you may already know, last week all the teachers in Surrey voted for an action plan against Bill 22. One of the components of the action plan includes the withdrawal of extracurricular activities. I'm very sorry, but this means that we will not be able to meet for Japanese Club for the rest of the school year. While I do support our union, at the same time this makes me sad, because I enjoy meeting with you all so much! I hope you can understand why this is happening and I'm sorry that it affects you guys so much.

In any case, I thank you for your time and interest in the Japanese Club, and that you will continue to study your hiragana and maybe even katakana! ;) Remember you can check out the great sites I've posted links to on my site to continue studying if you wish. I hope that you do.

Please stay in touch and don't be afraid to stop by and say hi. Remember that you can expect our Japanese exchange student guests to be arriving at our school the beginning of June. I believe it is June 1st or 3rd or something like that. I will contact you &/or be sure to pass your names onto Ms.Thompson so that you can be paired up with the Japanese students for the morning! Please keep this in mind and stay tuned for upcoming details.Don't forget to practice the basic conversational questions and answers I taught you, so that you can try out your Japanese with the students from Japan!

April 18th Meeting

Konnichiwa Minasan,

We will have a club meeting today after school as usual. Last week we started watching another of Hayao Miyazaki's anime movies, My Neighbour Totorro, one of his original famous fantasies. We will continue watching this movie and hopefully finish it!It is really cute and of course, kind of strange!
Kore wa totorro desu!
Hope to see you on Wednesday!
